Basically head lice are parasites that live off humans. They live and eat by sucking blood and have adapted to live on the human scalp and neck by clinging to hair strands. Head lice are able to stay on our heads using their arms and legs to stick to our har. Head lice are tiny creautres which makes getting rid of them a challenge, they are about the size of a sesame seed when mature.

Depending on the environment and life stage the lice will either be light brown to grey and sometimes even black in color. As they are from the insect family they have six legs which all end with claws. Head lice are actually wingless which means that they cannot fly and their mouth is used to dig and barrow onto the scalp of the host. The parasites feed at least once a day by burrowing into the scalp and sucking blood.
